In a small village nestled between green hills and flowing rivers, there lived an old man named Samuel. Samuel was known for his wisdom, not because he had traveled far or studied in prestigious schools, but because he had lived a life of harmony and balance. He always told stories to the younger villagers, emphasizing one thing: too much or too little of anything can upset the delicate balance of life.
One day, a young villager named Carla approached Samuel, seeking advice. Carla had been struggling to find peace in her life. She was either working too much, sleeping too little, or focusing on her health at the expense of her relationships. Nothing seemed to fit together, and it was causing her endless stress. “How can I balance everything in life, Samuel?” she asked.
Samuel smiled gently and gestured for Carla to sit beside him. “Life is like a wheel with many spokes,” Samuel began. “Each spoke represents a different dimension of your life—work, health, relationships, leisure, and growth. If one spoke grows too long or too short, the wheel won’t turn smoothly. You will stumble, and life will feel out of balance.”
Samuel explained that every dimension of life has a healthy range, a sweet spot. “Work is important,” he said, “but too much and you will exhaust yourself, too little and you won’t fulfill your purpose. The same is true for your health, your relationships, and your time for rest. Every part of your life has its own range, and to live a balanced life, you need to stay within those ranges.”
“But how do I know if I’m in the right range?” Carla asked, confused.
Samuel’s eyes twinkled as he continued. “You must first be aware of each dimension in your life. Identify what matters to you—whether it’s your work, family, or health—and know what a healthy range looks like for each. Then, gain the knowledge to understand what actions will keep you within those ranges. If you’re too focused on one thing, pull back a little. If you’re neglecting another, give it more attention.”
Carla nodded, beginning to understand.
“Lastly,” Samuel added, “you must monitor your life regularly. Don’t let things go unchecked for too long. Life can change quickly, and what once was balanced may shift without you even realizing it. Pay attention, and adjust as needed. If you monitor the spokes of your life, you’ll avoid the stress that comes from sudden surprises or overwhelming burdens.”
